2010 GT Competition: “Incredible”

We can describe the entire 2010 American Le Mans Series GT season in just one word: Incredible.

What can you say about a class of racing where Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Corvette, Jaguar, and Ford all battle for every inch of every lap through an entire season? Where Michelin, Dunlop, Falken and Yokohama all roll-out their best at every round?

A class when Ferrari sends Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander to drive the second car on a GT team?

Where a former Indy 500 winning team, headed by an Indy winning driver and three-time series champion, moves virtually intact into GT competition with a two-car BMW factory team, top engineers, cunning race strategy, and stellar pit work, and wins one race?

A class where GT standard bearers Risi Competizione Ferrari and Flying Lizard Porsche valiantly fought to score four wins each, only to lose the manufacturer and team titles to the consistent pair of BMWs?

Where two of the most aggressive drivers in the world, racing on their BMW team’s home track, are both passed for the win in one move by an even more aggressive GT driver, Risi Ferrari’s Jaime Melo, who boldly dropped his right side tires onto the dirt and grass at the end of the straightaway?

Here is a class where Corvette Racing, one of the most successful teams in the history of sports car endurance racing, fights tooth and nail and scores its only win of the season on the last turn of the last lap of the last race?

How can you describe a season where at the white flag on the last lap of the season, Porsche’s Patrick Long and Joerg Bergmeister would claim the driver championship, Ferrari would hoist the manufacturers title, and BMW Rahal Letterman Racing would hold the team championship. But wait, that changed when the lead Ferrari ran out of fuel?

You say, “Incredible.”

And if you are like most fans, you then say, “Wow that was great! Now, do it again!”

Here are some of our favorite moments of the GT competition in the 2010 ALMS season.
