18 hour update: Rolex 24 at Daytona

January 27, 2013

2013-01-27 at 07-38-29The future may be clear for sportscar racing in North America in 2014 but the vision on track at the Rolex 24 at Daytona on Sunday morning was anything but.

The track was blanketted with heavy fog causing a long 105-minute yellow flag period which gave drivers a rest, but sent team strategy experts into a tailspin trying to work out their pit strategy to chase down those elusive Rolex watches which are handed out in victory lane.

After 18 hours, five cars remained on the lead lap in contention for the overall victory led by the Ganassi car of Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Juan Pablo Montoya and Charlie Kimball.

Remarkably the reigning champions, Michael Shank Racing had fought back from early delays to be only one lap off the lead. Shortly after the 3/4 race distance, they were back in contention on the lead lap.

In GT in was time for Porsche to take its turn at the front of the pack with the MOMO entry in P1. Their driving line-up includes the likes of Sean Edwards and Patrick Pilet – both of whom have been seen in action in the American Le Mans Series.

The lead factory Audi R8 keeps stalking in third place run by Alex Job Racing.
